CPR: The Family Altar
Friday May 04, 2018
Friday May 04, 2018
Pastor Nathan Pfeiffer joins Nathanael Mayhew this week to discuss the importance of the "Family Altar." "Family altar" is a phrase that is used to desribe the work of Christian instruction and worship in the home, not just in church. We will discuss the Biblical foundation for the family altar, which reveals that God has entrusted with parents the vital role of educating their children in Christian truths. These passages point out that this instruction is to permeate the life of the Christian family: when we are on the road, at home, in our discussions, when we wake up and when we go to sleep at night. It begin with parents making this an important part of their own lives, so that they can then impart it in their children's lives. In addition to the the Biblical study, we will also offer a number of devotional resources for you at the family altar. If you would like a full list of these resources, message us or email us at burdenandblessing@gmail.com. We pray that this study will assist you in the work of establishing or maintaining a family altar!

CPR - School Shootings, Violence, and the Spiritual Decline of our Nation
Friday Mar 09, 2018
Friday Mar 09, 2018
In this week's CPR episode, Pastors Mark Tiefel and Neal Radichel discuss a topic that has been on the hearts and minds of many in our nation - the topic of school shootings and violence. With yet another school shooting recently, this has become a hot topic in the political sphere with comments mostly focusing on the issue of gun rights and whether or not there should be stricter gun control. Sadly, what is almost completely overlooked in this discussion are the spiritual issues that are at the heart of this topic. Our discussion will focus on how the spiritual decline of our nation is really at the center of the violence we see. We also will discuss how we, as Christians, can respond to these issues with the Word of God. We pray that our discussion will be beneficial as we wrestle with this important issue.

CPR - Podcasting and the Divine Call
Saturday Feb 24, 2018
Saturday Feb 24, 2018
In today's CPR episode, Pastors Nathanael Mayhew, Mark Tiefel, Neal Radichel, and Rob Sauers join together for a roundtable discussion on the impact of social media on the divine call. This is a follow-up to our recent podcast where we asked whether or not podcasting hurts preaching. Here, we are asking whether or not podcasting and other forms of social media that we may use to proclaim God's Word interfere with a pastor's divine call to his congregation. We will discuss some of the concerns of those who believe that social media does interfere with a pastor's call and talk about the importance of communication between fellow pastors and the members we serve to address some of these concerns. We will also discuss some of the ways in which social media can be beneficial to both pastors and the members we serve. We pray that the Lord will bless our study!

CPR - The Divine Call
Friday Feb 09, 2018
Friday Feb 09, 2018
In today's podcast, Pastors Nathanael Mayhew and Neal Radichel discuss the topic of the Divine Call. In one sense, all Christians have a divine call from the Lord as described in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 - "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” But typically when we talk about the Divine Call, we are talking about a call to the Public Ministry - when a congregation or a church body calls a pastor or teacher to serve them. In many denominations, the calling of a pastor or teacher is very similar to the process of applying for any other job. In the Lutheran church, we take a much different approach when it comes to issuing a call. Our discussion will define the Divine Call, discuss how we typically go about issuing a call, and how a pastor or teacher go about deciding what to do when they receive a call. We pray that this study will be informative and beneficial to you!

CPR - Does Podcasting Hurt Preaching?
Friday Jan 26, 2018
Friday Jan 26, 2018
In today's podcast, Pastors Nathanael Mayhew, Mark Tiefel, Neal Radichel, and Rob Sauers all gather together for a roundtable discussion on podcasting. Our discussion is in response to a recent article published in Christianity Today entitled "How Podcasting Hurts Preaching" which you can read by clicking here. As the title of the article suggests, the author argues that podcasting takes away from the value of the Sunday sermon, even causing some not to see the value in going to church at all. In our discussion, we will highlight the importance of gathering together for worship regularly while also pointing out how podcasts like ours and sermons you may listen to online can be beneficial to you in your daily Christian walk.

CPR - Stewardship Part 2 - Making a Plan
Friday Jan 12, 2018
Friday Jan 12, 2018
On today's CPR episode, Mike Schierenbeck and Pastor Neal Radichel join us again to discuss part 2 in their series on Christian Stewardship. Part 1 dealt with the motivation for giving, and that really is the first step of the topic for this podcast - developing a plan for Christian Stewardship. The point of developing a plan is so that our giving will be purposeful and intentional. This begins with the understanding that we give not out of obligation or in order to earn heaven, but rather in thankfulness for all that the Lord has given to us. In this study, we will be encouraged to give as the Lord prospers us (cf. 1 Corinthians 16:2). We will also explore some of the personal challenges we face in giving as well as some ways we can talk about this important, but not always easy to talk about, subject. We pray that this study will encourage you to consider your own stewardship as you seek to express your thankfulness to the Lord for all He has done for you.

CPR - Are You Motivated to Give? - Stewardship (Part 1)
Friday Jan 05, 2018
Friday Jan 05, 2018
In today's CPR, Retired Pastor Mike Schierenbeck joins Pastor Neal Radichel to discuss the topic of Christian Stewardship and specifically, what our motivation should be as we bring our tithes and offerings before the Lord. This can be a difficult topic to discuss because of the fear of giving the wrong impression that the church is all about money. However, we should discuss this topic as it shows us the privilege we have to give thanks to our God by giving back to Him from what He has so graciously given to us. In our study, we will discuss what it means to be a steward, what some of the wrong motivations are in giving, and finally, what the proper motivation should be for Christian Stewardship. We pray that this study will be a blessing to you!

CPR - Thanksgiving
Friday Nov 24, 2017
Friday Nov 24, 2017
In today's podcast, Pastors Nathanael Mayhew and Neal Radichel discuss the holiday we just celebrated - Thanksgiving. Though this holiday has somewhat secular roots and was not initially celebrated in American Lutheranism, we certainly do well to set time aside during this holiday to remember to give thanks to God for all of His blessings. Often when we think of those blessings, we think of physical blessings like food, clothing, and shelter, but there are many other things for which we can and should give thanks. Using the Apostles Creed as a guide, this study will discuss the first, second, and third article blessings we receive from God. We pray that this will be an encouragement to you to give thanks to the Lord every day.

CPR - Where Do Babies (and Faith) Come From?
Friday Nov 17, 2017
Friday Nov 17, 2017
Faith is one of those topics that is very often misunderstood in our world today. The Bible itself, while speaking a lot about faith, only defines it in one place - Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." In order to help us gain a better understanding of what faith is and specifically how faith begins, Pastors Neal Radichel and Nathanael Mayhew take us through a discussion of faith in today's CPR episode from a unique perspective - comparing the beginning of faith to the beginning of physical life. We pray that this study will help you to better understand this important concept.
