Word of the Week: Engagement

Join us for another word of the week in our marriage series, with the word engagement. Pastor Nathanael Mayhew will discuss the modern view of engagement and compare that with the ancient practice of betrothal and offer some thoughts to keep in mind when a person is considering getting married, with the understanding that who we marry can and will have a huge impact on our relationship with Christ.

Word of the Week: Fornication

In our Word of the Week series on marriage, today we consider God's warning against fornication. This is an important word to study and understand in our current "hook up culture" and in a society that encourages any behavior contrary to God's will. This word is a broad word describing any sexual activity outside of the marriage relationship. Any such activity God expressly condemns as contrary to His will and as sin. Through this command God desires to protect the marriage relationship which is the mechanism He intends to use to give rich blessings to us. 

Word of the Week: Marriage

With this episode we begin a series on terms related to marriage. Pastor Mark Tiefel begins with definition of the word marriage itself. He takes us back to the institution of marriage and what God intends for it to be and the problems that we face in marriage because of our sinful nature and the temptations of the world around us. We pray that this series serves to encourage you in the God intended blessing of marriage and in love and respect for your spouse!

Word of the Week: Mercy

Pastor Mark Tiefel defines the word Mercy as it is used in Scripture. In the Old and New Testaments there were two words for mercy: compassion, or steadfast love. This second word emphasizes the feelings behind the compassion and what it was moved to do. God's mercy is more than a feeling, is moves Him to action. Mercy also moves us to repentance knowing that God is merciful. We are not worthy of being forgiven. Forgiveness comes from the mercy of God.

Word of the Week: Justice

What makes something just or unjust? What is justice? Justice is doing what is right, and this has to be founded on an objective standard that applies universally to all people. The word justice was used by the prophets to describe the coming Savior who would bring "righteousness" or "justice" to the world. But compare that to our world today or the term "social justice" as used in our world. As used by our world this idea is based on subjective, always changing principles. How confusing! This is not true justice! But Jesus is, and there is nothing that can be substituted for that truth and objective standard which comes from God alone. 

Word of the Week: Scripture

Join Pastor Mark Tiefel as he describes and defines the word "Scriptures" and show where it came from. This term is derived from Latin and Greek and simply means "writings". From this basic definition we are simply saying that these books of the Bible are simply things that were written. But there is a deeper meaning as well. The writings of the books of the Bible were different from other writings. Jesus Himself understood and declares that these writings are from God. The apostles also use this term to show that the writings of the Old and New Testaments are holy, or given by God. They are God's words, not man's. What a blessing that God had communicated these truths to us through the Scriptures!

What is a Christian? Join us to see how the New Testament defines what a Christian is and how that term is used of those in the early New Testament era. Being a Christian is more than just a name. It is a confession. Join us for a look at this important word!

Word of the Week: Disciple

What is a disciple? Basically it means "one who follows" but we find that it is much more than just that. Pastor Mark Tiefel defines the word disciple and also points to what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Following Jesus implies endurance. Those who follow Jesus will be disciplined as His disciples, and while that may be difficult, it is better to be disciplined then to be lost and separated from God.

Word of the Week: Priest

Join Vicar Drew Naumann as he highlights the work of the priest in the Old Testament. He will show the role that priests served in that time, both for God and for sinners, and will show how that office points us to Christ and His work for us at the cross. Because Christ has made complete and full atonement for us through His death, we have no need for priests today. Instead each Christian serves as a "priest" before God, but in a different way.

Are there modern apostles? What were they and what did they do? How did they differ from an evangelist or a prophet? Literally, an apostle someone who is sent with a message. But in a more narrow sense, the apostles were the twelve men whom Jesus chose, instructed and sent out to lead His church. Learn who they were and what they did in this episode.
